Citronella-Essential Oils Under $20
It is the perfect season to bring out essential oils like Lemon Eucalyptus and Citronella. At least in St. Louis, it is because we’ve already had quite a few days of warm weather-not go swimming warm, but warm enough to bust out the short sleeve shirts.
The scent of Citronella oil reminds me that warmer weather is on the way, even though it’s raining now and I’m wrapped in a wool scarf. I know that just around the corner are evenings spent outside, catching fireflies. Maybe a bonfire or two. Night swimming…Can you tell I’m ready for summer?
Citronella is famous for being able to repel bugs, but what else is Citronella essential oil good for? I think you’ll find some surprising answers below.
AROMATIC USE
To use this oil aromatically put a few drops in a diffuser, on table cloths, or picnic blankets. This is a safer option than tiki torches.
Citronella is famous for repelling mosquitoes without using poisons like Deet. It also may repel ticks and ward off flies.
When it comes to mood, it’s know for being both uplifting and relaxing. It helps when you’re feeling stressed or anxious.
In a study on rats, in haling citronella reduced the rat’s food consumption which led to a reduction in fat tissue.
You can skip the synthetic deodorizers (like Febreeze) and diffuse Citronella essential oil instead. Citronella will purify the air rather than just masking the scent like air fresheners do.
Combine with Eucalyptus and lemongrass for a super bug repellent.
TOPICAL USE
I found some big surprises for topical use of Citronella essential oil.
A drop or two can be included in your kids’ shampoo if you have a concern that bugs may be living in their hair.
You can add it to a lotion or carrier oil for a soothing massage for sore joints and muscles and to tonify the body’s systems.
It can be put on the bottoms of feet and abdomen to help your body create an environment that’s inhospitable to parasites.
Put it in a spray bottle with water to use to clean kitchen counters and stovetops.
Citronella is included in anti-barking dog collars. When you use doTerra’s citronella, you’ll know you’re putting the safest essential oil on your fur baby.
Citronella may support the body’s natural detox functions. On it’s own, this would be a great daily support. Remember to listen to your body when using detox substances, even the natural ones like teas. If you have a headache or flu-like symptoms, take a step back from the amount or number of detox agents you’re using.
Combine with lavender and tea tree for a hair treatment.
INTERNAL USE
This isn’t going to do much for you internally. So save it for aromatic and topical use.
