Don't throw out your clay mask! Here are 7 things to do with it.

It may look like a goopy mess, but a bentonite clay mask is about as close to gooey gold as you can get. When I make a batch of this incredible mask, everyone in the house gets some. If there’s any left, I pop it into a container and put it in the fridge.

But why would I be so crazy about a little dried mud mixed with vinegar and water? Because it does so many things. So here’s a quick list of all the things bentonite clay mask comes in handy for…

  1. Poison ivy & bug bites-Bentonite clay takes the sting as well as the toxins out of the skin directly. It is soothing and helps the skin heal quickly. Use this several times a day until you don’t need it anymore.

  2. Pimples and blackheads-Pimples are usually either emotionally rooted (Ever get a stubborn one right after a confrontation? I sure have.) or the body expelling toxins. When it is because of the toxins, bentonite clay can really speed up the healing process by drawing the toxins out through the skin. Use 1-2 times a day.
If I don’t notice changes after a couple of days, I usually switch tactics and try a plain, full fat organic yogurt applied directly to the spot.

  3. Lymph pathways-Did you know your lymphatic system is the first filter of your body? It’s how cellular wastes move to the detox pathways (sweat glands, pee, poop, etc.) If that system gets stopped up, you’ll have lots of short and long-term issues including allergies, cellulite, hormonal imbalances, and auto-immune disorders, just to name a few. So I use the mask to clear some of the main detox pathways at least once a week. (This is some awesome to do between Assisted Lymphatic Therapy sessions.) Apply the mask above your collar bones and under your armpits. Leave on for at least 10 minutes and wash off.

  4. Sore joints-Speaking of lymph, did you know all of your joints have lymph nodes in them? So if you’re having soreness in a specific joint, putting your mask on that area for at least 10 minutes can help. In addition to clearing the lymph, the mask can also pull toxins out of the area. It’s a win-win without any downsides.

  5. Chapped lips-I have an emotional track that gives me severely chapped lips when triggered. While I’ve made a lot of progress towards resolving it, my lips still get chapped from time to time. I have found bentonite clay heals them faster than anything I’ve ever tried topically. I use it several times a day, anytime I have 5 or so minutes and they can make a dramatic turn around in 1-2 days.

  6. Moles-As an experiment, I started using the clay mask in the morning and evening on the raised moles on my face. I saw big changes in the first week. Since then, I’ve been putting it on at night and leaving it on until morning.

  7. Warts-Apply the mask and, this time cover with a bandage to keep the clay in place.

If you’ve never made a mask before, it couldn’t be easier. Pour some clay powder in a food safe plastic container. Add some vinegar and water and shake it. You’ll see it expand and mix together in the container. Keep adding more clay/water and shaking until it is the consistency of sour cream.

Pro tip: Do NOT use metal on the clay or it will loose some of its effectiveness.

It will keep in the fridge for up to a week, but it does seem to loose some of its power over that week. At that point, I either add the leftover to a bath, or do a major mask to use it up and start fresh.

Have you ever used bentonite clay?
