Beyond Gum or Toothpaste-What to do with Spearmint

SPEARMINT and peppermint are both mints, but with very different notes in the smell and taste. Peppermint has more menthol which makes it more intensely cooling while spearmint is more sweet (because it has more carvone.)

Here are my favorites uses for spearmint.

AROMATIC USE

Using it is as simple as opening the bottle and smelling from it, putting a couple of drops in a diffuser, or a drop on my wrist and smelling it.

  • I do this anytime I need to focus on something (especially if I don’t want to do it-I’m looking at you, Cleaning.)

  • I love to use it when I’m feeling anxiousness and need some calming.

  • Add a drop along with melaleuca, lemon, and oregano to a steaming mug of hot water when you need some respiratory support. Inhale the steam. Keep tissues near by.

  • My kids love it in their diffuser at night.

A FAVORITE BLEND TO DIFFUSE IS SPEARMINT, LAVENDER, AND LIME.

TOPICAL USE

You could just mix it with your lotion, put it all over your body, and be happy and tingly. But more specifically, here are a few ways I use it:

  • I put a few drops in my tooth oil or mouthwash (Yes, I make a tooth oil in place of toothpaste! See the recipe below.)

  • Add a drop to your body wash to make it invigorating & tingly.

  • Include in a roller bottle to soothe muscles.

AWESOME TOOTH OIL RECIPE INVOLVES ADDING SPEARMINT, PROTECTIVE BLEND, MYRRH, LEMON, AND HELICHRYSUM TO EQUAL PARTS ALMOND OIL & BAKING SODA.

INTERNAL USE

NOTE ABOUT INTERNAL USE OF ESSENTIAL OILS: not all oils are of high enough quality & purity to use internally. I use a specific brand and this company stands by its oils and has researched to make sure internal use is safe with SOME of their oils. (I say SOME because you can’t eat wood no matter how pure it is.)

This is oil tastes sweet and would be refreshing in water or food. Spearmint is often used in savory dishes. Or I add it to a capsule if I’m not going for taste.

Spearmint is great to use internally by…

  • Adding a drop to marinades, desert, or candy recipes for a fresh flavor.

  • Adding a drop to water, under my tongue, or to a tea for my occasional stomach discomfort.

  • Add a drop to any tea.

  • Add spearmint to a capsule to support healthy hormone balance.

A SIMPLE COMBO FOR YOUR WATER WOULD BE SPEARMINT AND TANGERINE OIL.
