You NEED This Oil-Oregano
I’m starting a “You NEED this oil,” series for you all. This series will focus on the most popular oils. If you’re new to oils (or even if you’re not) it will help you cover all your bases so you can have something on hand for just about anything.
OREGANO. Here’s my real talk about oregano. It was the first oil that made me say “OMG, did that just happen?” when I started using my oils. So it has a special place in my heart. AND I rarely use it. Why? Because it smells like pasta sauce & that’s not how I want to go down. (I’d much rather smell like garlic. Haha.)
That said, it’s powerful at what it does so I never let myself run out of it.
AROMATIC USE
I mean, I guess you could diffuse oregano, but honestly the only time I would is if I was really worried about trying to clean the air & soft surfaces or if I wanted to get back at someone I lived with by making them think I made pizza when I didn’t. I don’t get that evil very often. So this list is short & sweet.
To help clear sinus passages, I add 1 drop (SERIOUSLY, 1 drop!) to a mug of hot water with peppermint, lemon, and tea tree oil. Inhale from the steam. Repeat 1-2 times daily as needed for up to 10 days.
According to Rebecca Hintze’s book “Emotions and Essential Oils,” oregano can help us let go of unhealthy & toxic attachments and belief systems. Especially when we have been stubborn about wanting to hang onto them.
FAVORITE BLEND TO DIFFUSE IS OREGANO WITH THE PROTECTIVE BLEND WHEN WE NEED SOME DEEP CLEANING.
TOPICAL USE
Oregano is probably one of the “hottest” oils. That means it will literally feel hot & intense if you get it on your skin without a carrier oil.
SAFETY TIP: If that happens, simply put clean carrier oil on the area (if it’s the eyes, put the carrier oil around the eye socket) and use a clean cloth to wipe it off.
I put this on the bottom of my feet & along my back when my immune system needs some support. (See my favorite co-conspirator oils below.)
I dilute this with lots of carrier oil and use it on my hands and wrists if they’re sore from a lot of typing or other fine motor tasks.
It can be used on feet when they are itchy or have hard and uncomfortable areas.

INTERNAL USE
NOTE ABOUT INTERNAL USE OF ESSENTIAL OILS: not all oils are of high enough quality & purity to use internally. I use a specific brand and this company stands by its oils and has researched to make sure internal use is safe with SOME of their oils. (I say SOME because you can’t eat wood no matter how pure it is.)
I do not put oregano in water unless I don’t want to feel my mouth and throat (remember it’s hot.) And while it CAN be used in cooking, you have to do it by dipping a toothpick in the bottle then swirling the toothpick in your sauce/soup/whatever. You lost me at “dip a toothpick.” If you’re a little more adventurous than I am in this regard, here are a few recipes. (Click the “blog” button to see them.)
So here are the ways I use oregano internally.
I’ll put a drop in a capsule when I want to support my immune system in addition to using it topically.
Same capsule use to support my digestive system’s ability to absorb nutrients AND the integrity of the intestinal barrier. (See a cool article about that here.)
WHEN USING OREGANO INTERNALLY, TEA TREE OIL ALSO WORKS WITH IT FOR MANY DIFFERENT SUPPORTS.
